Broom making in India

Broom Businesses Transform Women's Lives in India (March, 2021)

The COVID pandemic has been a stressful period for all of us, but day laborers in rural India were especially hit hard when the lockdown began a year ago.

A few Kondho tribal women in Rangniguda, however, came up with a promising solution to help support their families. They realized that with a bit of financial support they could start Broom Businesses to support themselves and their children.

A ministry in India called Reaching Hand Society - that was founded by one of our COTH member's sister - is helping women do just that! The ministry provides some initial funding and training to help struggling women begin their own businesses. These new entrepreneurs buy the raw materials at the local weekly market from the women who stay up in the hills, make the brooms, and then sell them at other weekly markets.

Church on the Hill was able to be a part of this exciting development program. We gave to fund new broom businesses for 15 women whose livelihoods were seriously impacted by COVID-19. This will help them get back to self-sustainability.

Your generosity helped them "sweep out the old and sweep in the new!"
